In the case of written examinations, you can do this up until immediately before the assignment is issued; in the case of oral examinations, you must withdraw at least three days in advance. If you are unable to withdraw in time due to illness, you should consult a medical professional. They will give you a doctor's certificate. For some time now, a so-called qualified certificate (qualifiziertes Attest) has been required. The medical staff will probably know what this is. You must submit this certificate to your examination board (Which examination board is responsible for me?). They will then take care of the rest.
