As long as you only fill in the marked slots of the grade calculator, you do not need the password. The remaining slots are password-protected so that the calculation is not changed by mistake. The password is therefore not required for normal use.

In general, the public holidays of the state of Baden-Württemberg apply. In addition, the period around Christmas and New Year from December 24th to January 6th (which is a public holiday in BW) is generally lecture-free. The Pentecost week is also lecture-free.

The current periods for semester duration, lecture period, lecture-free period can also be found on the KIT website [1]

The programs that are needed for the university do not place particularly high demands on your computer. The CAD software for MKL also does not require a lot of resources for use in the scope of the course. If you do need a little more power, you can also work on the institute's workstations.
For mechanical engineering and mechatronics, there are also programs that only run on Windows. However, if you have a MAC or no laptop at all, you can also work on pool computers or via a virtual machine.

You don't “need” anything. The SCC has pool rooms with PCs where you can use Office and most of the important programs for the courses. Institutes that use special programs have their own pool rooms.

What leads to the expiry of the examination entitlement is regulated by Sections 32 (5) and 34 (2) of the State Higher Education Act (LHG) and the respective study and examination regulations. Section 32 LHG states that the examination entitlement is lost if a student has ultimately failed a course or examination required by the examination regulations or has not completed it on time, unless the student is not responsible for missing the deadline and the corresponding application was submitted to the examination board early on.

If a calculator is allowed in an exam, then usually only those without higher functions (integral calculus, memory function, graphics, etc.).
Many students have a TI-30X Plus, a Casio FX-86DE Plus or similar.

Studium

After completing your studies and applying for de-registration, you can download your certificate of eligibility in the student portal. This should be possible as soon as all achievements have been entered. It may take some time before the certificate is issued (let alone handed over). However, you will receive mail or be informed by e-mail as soon as the certificate is ready.

The examination period ends either on 31.03. or 30.09., depending on the semester.

If you finish after this period, you must re-register.
We generally recommend that you re-register, even if you are likely to finish just before the end of the examination period, in order to be covered in the event of any extensions etc. Most of the fees can be refunded if the work is completed quickly enough.

Each written exam is offered twice a year, usually once a semester. (Reminder: The respective course is only offered once a year).

You may repeat an examination once in writing. If you fail this as well, you will have to retake an oral exam (legally speaking, a written retake and an oral retake are one exam).

If this is also not enough, you have the option of applying for a second resit (formerly also known as a hardship application or rector's application). This gives you the opportunity to take ONE more exam in the relevant subject (i.e. written and oral).

You cannot submit a second repeat application for orientation examinations!

Yes, but you need special professional, academic or artistic reasons for this (§60, Section 1, sentence 3 LHG). This proof is usually difficult to provide.

If you have completed all the required coursework, you will be de-registered ex officio at the end of the current semester.

It is best to contact the secretariat of the institute offering the exam as soon as possible. The contact details can usually be found on the right-hand side of the institute's website or you can click on the name of the person responsible (lecturer or professor). In any case, you should come to the exam and speak to the person responsible. Sometimes the institutes are tolerant. However, they are not obliged to let you take the exam. Some institutes categorically exclude late registration in advance by announcement/notice.

(If, after reading this information, you still feel unsure of your situation or have any remaining questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via our contact form)

SIMPLE PHRASING:

When you register for an examination, you start an examination procedure. Once a procedure has been started, it can only be terminated by failing or passing. The procedure can only be ended with a pass if the first or second written examination is passed or the oral re-examination is passed. In the case of oral examinations, there are only two attempts and no oral re-examination. The procedure is independent of other legal relationships. This means that regardless of whether you are enrolled or not, on vacation, on an internship or anything else, none of this has any influence on the procedure. This means that the procedure continues even after exmatriculation. Since the oral re-examination is an inseparable part of the second written attempt, exmatriculation after a failed second written attempt without taking the oral re-examination and passing the oral re-examination leads to failure of the examination procedure. If you de-register after failing the first attempt, the procedure continues.

As an examinee, you are not entitled to a certain amount of preparation time for the oral re-examination.

The date on which the examination procedure ends is the date on which you ultimately pass or fail.

In the case of the oral re-examination, this is the day of the oral re-examination.

LEGAL PHRASING:

The oral re-examination is NOT an independent examination. The oral re-examination is an inseparable part of the re-examination of a failed written examination. Therefore, if a candidate claims the right to a re-examination granted to him/her by the study and examination regulations in connection with a failed written examination, then the examination procedure for this examination, once begun, is only completed with the decision on the re-examination, i.e. with the assessment of the performance of the oral re-examination, and the legal examination relationship, which begins with the admission of a candidate to the examination, is only terminated with the passing of the examination or with the final failure of the examination.

Consequently, all candidates who unsuccessfully attempt to retake a written examination are also obliged to take an oral re-examination “in connection with the date of the failed examination” (see Section 9 (1) of the Framework Regulations for the SPOs of the bachelor degree programm [1]), regardless of whether they are in a semester of leave or are still enrolled on the degree program.

This is because the examination rights relationship is independent of other legal relationships. Consequently, it is also independent of the existence of a membership relationship. Exmatriculation therefore has no effect on an examination procedure once it has begun, as is often wrongly assumed. Such an examination procedure, once started, must be completed regardless of the membership relationship. Candidates are also not entitled to a certain amount of preparation time in connection with the oral re-examination.

A semester of leave of absence pauses your studies for up to two semesters if you are unable to attend your studies due to illness, for example. Leave semesters are only granted upon justified application. Some possible reasons are:

  • Illness (mental or physical)
  • Voluntary practical activity that serves the study objective
  • Studying at a foreign university
  • Bufdi, FSJ, FÖJ
  • Maternity protection/parental leave
  • Other important reasons (e.g. caring for a close relative)

During your leave of absence, your semester counter is stopped and you are not allowed to take any coursework. However, examinations are permitted with the exception of Bachelor's, Master's or other final theses as well as examinations taken during the semester. (There is another FAQ on the difference between the two terms "coursework (Studienleistung)” and “examination achievement (Prüfungsleistung)") You can find more information and details on how to apply here: https://www.sle.kit.edu/english/imstudium/700.php

Whether a certain form is specified for theses depends primarily on your supervisor or your institute. There are no general rules regarding the structure.

The assumption that the student council determines the examination dates is not true. Instead, we make suggestions to the institutes. Only when they agree and all lecture halls are booked can we publish the dates on our homepage. You will then also find the exam dates on the institute pages and in the CAS. This usually happens at the beginning of each semester.

You can apply for a second retake if you have definitively failed an examination. This is the case if you have failed both written attempts and the oral retake exam.

If your application for a second retake is accepted, you can still pass the exam in another attempt (this is a written exam + an oral retake).

If you have to apply for a second retake, be sure to come to the student council! We will advise you.

From a legal point of view, you lose your right to take the exam if you finally fail. If you successfully apply for a second retake, you will be granted this right again.

A second retake application in the same examination (i.e. in other words a third retake application) is not permitted.

No, there is no minimum number.
However, if you receive BAföG, you must have 65 ECTS in CIW/BIW after the 4th semester in order to receive funding beyond the 4th semester; in Mechanical Engineering, you must have passed at least 11 of 14 possible examinations or have 90 ECTS after the 4th semester.

Written and oral examinations are examination achievements. They usually take place at the end of the semester on one day only. Coursework is completed during the semester. Mandatory industrial internships, lab courses and, for example, the preliminary work for TM I/II Mechanical Engineering and HM I/II/III are coursework. Coursework also includes examinations that are not graded (certificates). Students on leave of absence are not allowed to take coursework, but examinations are permitted.

Unlike at many other universities, it is not necessary to register for almost all lectures at KIT at the beginning of the semester. You attend the lecture during the semester and then register for the exam. In rare cases, the number of participants in individual lectures is limited, for example for project work or internships. The mode of admission restriction is then usually announced on the institute homepage and in the first lecture.

If you have lost your examination entitlement in a subject, you may not initially register for any further examinations. To restore this entitlement, you must submit an application: in the case of a deadline violation, an application for an extension of the deadline and in the case of a failed repeat examination, an application for a second repeat. You cannot apply for a second resit for orientation examinations! If you wish to apply for an extension of the deadline for an orientation examination, please contact the student representatives of the examination board beforehand. Once this application has been approved (and you have passed the examination in the subject), your entitlement to take the examination will be restored. In this case, there are no further consequences. If no such application is made, the examination remains ultimately failed and the examination entitlement is lost.
The student representatives on the examination boards will guide you through the application process. To receive the most accurate advice on this topic, contact them directly via the contact form on our website.
However, you do not have to submit an application that can lead to the restoration of your examination entitlement, in which case your examination entitlement will be lost. However, most universities require upon admission that the examination entitlement in this or a related subject has not been lost. Each faculty and university decides for itself whether a degree program is related. Most universities of applied sciences do not require an intact examination entitlement when enrolling. If you complete a Bachelor's degree at such a university in the subject in which you have lost the right to take examinations, it will be restored and enrollment at universities is possible again.
At KIT, MACH and MIT are related, as are CIW and BIW .  If you would like to transfer to KIT from another university and have lost your right to take examinations in a subject at this university, please contact the relevant examination board.

First of all, you can withdraw from any exam beforehand without giving reasons. In the case of written examinations, you can do this up until immediately before the assignment is issued; in the case of oral examinations, you must withdraw at least three days in advance. If you are unable to withdraw in time due to illness, you should consult a medical professional. They will give you a doctor's certificate. For some time now, a so-called qualified certificate (qualifiziertes Attest) has been required. The medical staff will probably know what this is. You must submit this certificate to your examination board (Which examination board is responsible for me?). They will then take care of the rest.

The “Faculty/Institute Library” field only needs to be signed if you are studying one of the listed degree programs. This signature is therefore not required for degree programs at the Faculties of Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering and Process Engineering.

You must submit an objection to the Office of Student Affairs within 4 weeks of receiving the de-registration notice. After paying the semester fee and any reminder fees for the forgotten re-registration, you will be re-enrolled.

First of all, stay calm and read this:

The legal situation is as follows: If you fail the oral re-examination, an examination is deemed to have been ultimately failed. This means that you also lose the right to take the exam in that subject. However, if you submit a well-founded application for a second retake, your examination entitlement can be restored.

Applications for a second retake must be submitted to the relevant examination board. There is at least one student representative on each examination board. You can cantact them via our contact form. The student representatives will then explain to you in detail and tailored to your case what you need to do. If you want, it is also possible to talk to us in person during our consultation hours.

Unfortunately, we do not keep lists of tutoring offers or requests. We recommend that you ask in the Facebook groups of the higher semesters. Otherwise, the MINT-Kolleg [1] offers both semester-accompanying courses and preliminary courses.

This is not possible via the online portal. You must fill out an examination registration form [1] and bring it to the student service ("Studierendenservice", mailbox). A few days later, you can pick it up there signed and bring it to the administration office of the institute conducting the examination.
After the examination, the institute will send this form back to the study office (Studienbüro).

This varies considerably. Some institutes manage to correct the exams within a week. In many cases, however, it can take up to eight weeks for the results to be finalized.
Especially in the “ major” examinations (e.g. HM, TM (Mechanical Engineering), MKL) a lot of time is needed for the correction.

The exam results are published in different ways. Some institutes display lists in their showcases, others post the lists on ILIAS, while others enter the grades directly into the student portal.

In the student portal (campus.studium.kit.edu) under Certificates →Course of study in the column PO-version.

Bescheinigungen und Formulare

There is no standard certificate for this. Your examiner may be able to provide you with a certificate.

ECTS grades are not currently calculated. However, a table with the average grades of the last few years is attached to your transcript.
For a fee, you can have your grades calculated at the Student Center.

The Student Center can issue you with one. Simply go to the Welcome Desk during opening hours [1].

With a 4.0 certificate, the examiner confirms that the work performed has been passed in any case. This is not yet the final grade. The certificate is there to provide proof of performance before the end of the correction process (correction + inspection + entry in the student portal), for example for an application for a Master's degree. If such a certificate is required, simply write to the responsible examiner and explain the reason.

For CIW/BIW, the 4.0 certificate must be requested from the responsible examination board, which will check the necessity of the certificate, as this is only issued in well-founded exceptional cases in order to avoid unnecessary additional work on the part of the examiners. The form can be found under https://www.ciw.kit.edu/bpa.php (Application for a 4,0 Bescheinigung).

Prüfungsvorbereitung

Yes, the solutions are sent to us together with the exams directly from the institutes.

Despite requests, some institutes do not supply us with exams for various reasons. Therefore, we can only recommend that you get together with your fellow students and compare the results. You can also ask students from higher semesters or have a look at Studydrive and Studocu.

For copyright reasons, it is not permitted to publish the exams digitally.
If you need old exams but can't come to Karlsruhe yourself, just ask a friend to send them to you by post.

No, for copyright reasons we can unfortunately only issue the examination transcripts in printed form. However, you are welcome to ask a friend to collect the examination transcripts for you and send them to you by post or as a scan.
