What is a semester off (leave of absence) and how can I apply for it?

A semester of leave of absence pauses your studies for up to two semesters if you are unable to attend your studies due to illness, for example. Leave semesters are only granted upon justified application. Some possible reasons are:

  • Illness (mental or physical)
  • Voluntary practical activity that serves the study objective
  • Studying at a foreign university
  • Bufdi, FSJ, FÖJ
  • Maternity protection/parental leave
  • Other important reasons (e.g. caring for a close relative)

During your leave of absence, your semester counter is stopped and you are not allowed to take any coursework. However, examinations are permitted with the exception of Bachelor's, Master's or other final theses as well as examinations taken during the semester. (There is another FAQ on the difference between the two terms "coursework (Studienleistung)” and “examination achievement (Prüfungsleistung)") You can find more information and details on how to apply here: https://www.sle.kit.edu/english/imstudium/700.php
