Allgemein

Many institutes advertise theses on their institute homepages. If you like an advertised thesis, contact the person supervising the thesis (usually research assistants, doctoral students).
Or you can visit the institute in person and find out from the institute's academic staff which Bachelor's theses they are offering in the near future.
The lecturers and/or supervisors of the profile subjects or specialization subjects often present their research areas at the institute and show in which field a thesis can be written.

If you are writing a Bachelor's thesis outside the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Process Engineering, you will need a supervisor (Prof.) from the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Process Engineering.
There is also a job portal on our website (/jobs), where Master's theses are offered.
BA: Bachelor thesis
MA: Master thesis

You can have modules worth 30 ECTS examined and registered as Master's courses.

You must have achieved at least 120 credit points in your Bachelor's degree program to be allowed to take the Master's course exam.

The registration of the modules from the “Extended Basics” takes place - as usual - online, you must declare the interdisciplinary qualifications (Überfachliche Qualifikationen) as a Master's course at Student Services (either when registering or, in the case of language course certificates, when submitting them).

You must then submit an “Application for transfer of Master's credits to the Master's degree program” in the first Master's semester for all modules that you would like to transfer to the Master's degree program. You can select which modules you need to transfer.

You can also find more information in our Bachelor's guide.

We have compiled some information to make the transition from Bachelor to Master easier for you.

For internal applicants, you will find a guide we have created in the download area called "Bachelor-Master-Übergang CIW/VT & BIW".

At

http://www.sle.kit.edu/vorstudium/masterbewerbung-intern.php

you can now find additional information from the Office of Student Affairs, which you should also take a look at.

Furthermore, a lot of information can also be found in the faculty's FAQ on the subject at

https://www.ciw.kit.edu/3318.php

If you have any further questions, simply contact us.

If modules such as interdisciplinary qualifications or additional achievements are listed under “not assigned grades”, you must fill out the following form [1] in the Bachelor's program and send it to Ms. Hofer. She will then add the coursework to the curriculum.

For the Master's degree, all information can be found in the faculty's FAQ [2].

The TU Berlin conversion table is used to convert grades. This can be easily obtained from Ms. Gärtner in the office of the Master's Examination Board.

No, there isn't.

The only exception are the orientation examinations, which must be written for the first time by the 2nd semester and passed by the end of the 3rd semester (the oral re-examination after the failed 2nd written attempt counts for the same semester as the 2nd written attempt).

The examination board is responsible for recognizing your achievements. If you would like an assessment in advance of what you could get recognized or who you can ask about this, it is best to contact our representatives on the examination boards.

During the Bachelor's degree course, a total of 6 ECTS must be completed in the area of “interdisciplinary qualifications”. Interdisciplinary qualifications (Überfachliche Qualifikationen) include non-technical modules, for example modules from other subject areas, language courses or other courses offered by the House of Competence (HoC), the Studium Generale or the (FORUM).

3 of the 6 ECTS are fixed: At least one of the following modules must be chosen:

  • Ethik und Stoffkreisläufe (3 ECTS)
  • Industriebetriebswirtschaftslehre (3 ECTS)

Modules amounting to 3 ECTS can be chosen freely. They can be either

  • both of the above modules
  • any modules worth at least 3 ECTS (e.g. HoC or FORUM courses)
  • SmartMentoring (3 ECTS)
  • Data-driven modeling with Python (3 ECTS)

The Bachelor's thesis should take 3 months. You should therefore draw up a timetable with your Bachelor's thesis supervisor so that the Bachelor's thesis can be written according to plan within this time. We recommend to include some spare time in this timetable, in case you take longer than expected. If time problems arise during the Bachelor's thesis, the Bachelor's thesis can be extended to a maximum of 4 months without an application.

The title of a Bachelor's thesis is only finalized on the final evaluation form and can therefore still be changed until then. However, the topic of a Bachelor's thesis can only be changed in the first month of work without the thesis being assessed.

To register your Bachelor's thesis, you must print out the “Antrag auf Zulassung zur Abschlussarbeit”, fill it out and hand it in to Ms. Hofer (Building 40.12, Room 103) together with the assignment signed by the person who set the task.
The Bachelor's Examination Board will enter the topic and start date of the assignment into the system and you will receive a confirmation email. You can then register for your Bachelor's thesis in the student portal (just like for a normal exam).

When the thesis is finished, you must also submit a copy to the Bachelor's Examination Board.

According to the SPO, the maximum timespan allowed is 4 months. However, if you write your thesis full-time, the 12 ECTS credits you receive for your Bachelor's thesis correspond to a period of 3 months. The 4-month rule is therefore only intended for exceptional cases (e.g. if you write an exam during your Bachelor's thesis, you do not need to apply for an extension but simply add on the time). When talking to your supervisor, you should make sure that the thesis is really designed for 3 months of working time and that you only write for longer if you still have to schedule study time for exams, measuring devices fail or similar.
An extension of up to one month beyond 4 months is generally possible upon application to the Bachelor's Examination Board, but will only be approved in very well-founded exceptional cases.

Please note: Interdisciplinary qualifications are displayed in the “list of not assigned grades” . The FAQ of the faculty (https://www.ciw.kit.edu/3318.php) explains the assignment in more detail.

No, they only build on Bachelor's courses (if at all). It doesn't matter whether you start your Master's in the winter or summer semester.

Conditional examinations are required for admission to a Master's degree with a Bachelor's degree from another university if the course content in the Bachelor's degree program differs significantly from the content at KIT. Conditional examinations are Bachelor's examinations that must be passed after the third semester. If preparatory work for the conditional examinations is a condition for participation in the written examination, this must also be completed.

No 4.0 certificate is required for the transition from the Bachelor CIW/BIW at KIT to the Master BIW/CIW at KIT.

All information on studying abroad and credit transfer can be found on the KIT faculty homepage.

Studienplan

As early as possible, because then it is guaranteed that you can study this, even if regulations change...  (Changes are still possible as long as a module has not yet been examined).

Yes, it is still possible to have this changed if you have not yet examined the subject you wish to change; a specialization subject can also still be changed as long as nothing has yet been examined from it.
